Bacterial vaginitis

What is Gardnerella Vaginalis?

Gardnerella vaginalis is the most common cause of bacterial vaginitis in mature and sexually active individuals. The disease replaces the vaginal flora, normally dominated by „good bacteria” (lactobacilli) with a complex and abundant flora in „bad bacteria”.

How does this infection occur?

Bacterial vaginitis occurs:
– following antibiotic treatments;
– in the case of hormonal variations;
– if your immunity decreases;
– if you have multiple partners or sexual contacts with a new partner.

Who is affected by bacterial vaginitis?

Bacterial vaginitis is very common among people with an active sex life with more partners.

Three out of four women will be affected at least once in a lifetime by this condition, which usually accompanies candidiasis, trichomoniasis or other urinary tract infections. Men may be contaminated by sexual contact with Gardnerella bacteria and may transmit infection to their partners.

Women who are carriers of Gardnerella Vaginalis (bacterial vaginitis) during pregnancy have an increased risk of spontaneous abortion and premature birth.

What are the symptoms?

There are many possible symptoms for Gardnerella Vaginalis. However, a high proportion of women and men are asymptomatic. There are also situations where the manifestations of the condition are more serious.

Although it is not possible to make a clear classification of the symptoms, as we can do with other vaginal infections, the most common symptoms are:
– abnormal, homogeneous, yellowish-gray vaginal discharge with an unpleasant smell (the smell may be the biggest sign of this condition);
– redness and swelling of the vulva;
– itches;
– pain.

How do you prevent the infection?

Using condoms and limiting the number of sexual partners are the most important measures you can take against this infection.

How do you know if you have Gardnerella Vaginalis?

Use the Veneris Bacterial Vaginitis Rapid Test. It is specially designed for you to get a quick result without having to go through unpleasant situations. You can try it at home or wherever you feel at ease and have privacy.

How does the test work?

Simply by analyzing a urine sample. The result is ready in just a few minutes, with a precision of over 98.7%.

What is the treatment?

Treatment for bacterial vaginitis is based on antibiotics, recommended by a specialist. It can be done by administering local medication (intravaginal) but also orally. Being a sexually transmitted infection, treatment is recommended for both partners. If the disease is not treated in time, the bacteria can be transferred into the urethra, where it also causes a urinary tract infection. The bacteria can also cause an abnormal PAP result, but treating the infection should lead to a negative result. Bacterial vaginitis can cause serious problems during pregnancy or after birth. Premature birth, weight loss, uterine infection and even spontaneous abortion are manifestations of bacterial vaginitis. If treatment is avoided, this may also reduce immunity to bacteria or other sexually transmitted diseases. Gardnerella vaginalis appears every time if the vaginal flora is disturbed. It is recommended to retest one month after treatment, to ensure complete elimination of the infection.
